The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated during the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 10, 2021 and the 12:30 p.m. Mass in Spanish on the same date.

The sacrament is not used only as a final farewell and prayer prior to death.  More so, it celebrates the comfort of Christ and the prayers of the Church for any Catholic person who has been baptized and is of sufficient age to be comforted by the Sacrament. The sacrament is intended for those who:

• suffer from any physical, emotional or mental illness,
• are preparing for any surgery or a planned hospitalization, or
• have a chronic or long-term condition which could recur such as heart problems or
  cancer.

If you wish to receive this sacrament, you may bring family and friends to be present with you at the time of anointing.  COVID-19 safety protocols (masks and social distancing) will be in place.

At our Masses next weekend, September 4-5, Arise Chicago is pleased to bring us a message about the sacred link between faith and labor and the dignity of all work.  As Cardinal Cupich stated, “For centuries, but especially over the last 125 years, the Catholic Church has offered a strong and principled vision on the dignity of work and justice for workers. Pope Leo XIII called for standards of justice in the work place including the right to a living wage, the right to safe work places, the right to health care, and to the need to provide for retirement.” Pope Francis declared that work “anoints us with dignity, fills us with dignity and makes us similar to God.”

The work that each of us performs is vital for the common good. God calls us to act so that each person will have a seat at the table, and can fully contribute and enjoy the abundance of God’s creation. Speakers from Arise will offer a brief comment at the end of each Mass. Happy Labor Day!

H. Em. Cardinal Cupich, after speaking with H. Em. Metropolitan Nathanael, has decided to postpone the August 31st Solemn Vespers for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation until Metropolitan Nathanael is available to attend.  An announcement will be made as soon as an alternative date is set.  In the spirit of ecumenism and building greater unity between the Roman Catholic Church and Greek Orthodox Church, may our two churches be a profound witness to our Christian mandate to care, protect and preserve God’s creation.
