HAVE A HAPPY, HOLY HALLOWEEN: CELEBRATE ALL SAINTS & ALL SOULS
In 835 A.D., Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for all the martyrs (later All Saints Day) from May 13 to November 1. The night before (October 31) became known as All Hallows’ Even or “holy evening.” Eventually the name was shortened in Scotland to Halloween. On November 2, the Church marks All Souls Day, sometimes celebrated as the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) in memory of deceased loved ones. The purpose of these feasts is to remember all who have died, including the holy people called Saints by the Church. Through the communion of saints, we stay connected to all of God’s family from throughout the ages. Along with secular traditions of eating candy and dressing in costumes, Halloween and the days that follow are a great time to select a patron saint and say a prayer to your patron, share memories of a family member who has died and make a donation or place Mass intentions in their honor.
In preparation for All Saints Day, November 1, and All Souls Day, November 2, let us pray for those who have gone before us as we try to grow in holiness and become more like Christ. Gather the names of deceased friends and relatives who you would like to enroll in the Parish Remembrance Society, to be prayed for at Mass several times a month. Please print the names legibly on the back of the All Souls envelope and return in any collection through mid-November, or add them to the book of intentions in the rear aisle at church. On All Souls Day, there will be a special table in the sanctuary so that you, our parishioners, can bring and display photos of your deceased loved ones during the morning Mass for All Souls Day. This table will remain at church for the rest of November, so we can continue to remember these faithful departed souls who remain part of the communion of saints. For Mass times on these special days, please see above.
