The ArtsScene at Queens features Northeastern Illinois University and /kor/ productions on Friday, December 3rd at 7:30 for a touching performance of Johannes Brahms’ A German Requiem. Featuring a chamber orchestra, chorus, and Soprano and Baritone soloists, Brahms’ work is sacred, though non liturgical. It offers solace to those left behind, with the text calling upon the Beatitudes, “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted”. Unlike the Roman Catholic Mass, the words are in German, and derived from the Luther Bible, expressing an overarching idea of the transition from the chaos and anxiety of grief to the comfort and warmth of remembrance. The familiar “Wie lieblich ist deine Wohnungen” (how lovely is thy dwelling place) is a highlight of the performance. This concert will be in the main church at 2330 W. Sunndyside. Suggested Donation of $10.
